Professional Development Services Offered by the Dual Language Training Institute - 2010

The Dual Language Training Institute offers comprehensive professional development as well as technical assistance (through campus/classroom visits) on the development and implementation of the Gómez & Gómez 50/50 Dual Language Enrichment Model. Services are offered at a district's or school's request and delivered at the respective site. Services are also offered in a region for multiple district participation (accommodates services to smaller districts).  The Institute contracts with education professionals that have extensive expertise in the various elements of the model. 

Below is a list of professional development services offered to ALL districts in various regions of the state of Texas and in Washington state in support of consistent implementation of our DLE model.  1.  Three-Day "Initial" Training on the Development and Implementation of the Gómez & Gómez 50/50  Dual Language Enrichment Model

Day 1   Understanding Dual Language Education (purpose, research, philosophy), Principles of a Dual Language Education, 50/50 Instructional Model (components), Language of the Day, Elements of Gómez & Gómez 50/50 Dual Language Classroom, The 50/50 Dual Language Classroom Schedule (PK-5), Bilingual Pairs (balanced classrooms)

Day 2   Challenging, Interactive and Authentic (CIA) Dual Language Classrooms, An Effective Dual Language Lesson Plan (lesson cycle), Second Language Acquisition (ESL/SSL), Cooperative Learning, Dual Language Grading Policy, Student/Program Assessment (report cards, testing)

Day 3   Critical Dual Language Model Components: Conceptual Refinement (supporting L2 content learners...PK-2), Specialized Vocabulary Enrichment Activities (facilitating biliteracy in all learners...3-5), Bilingual Learning Centers and Resource Centers, Fundamental Tenets of Dual Language Programs

5.  Three-Day or Two-Day Training on Cross-Curricular Integration: Dual Language Lessons that Support and Facilitate Biliteracy Development in the Gómez & Gómez 50/50 Dual Language Enrichment Model

Day 1

Applying state academic content standards (Texas, Washington State, Nevada) to the Gómez and Gómez 50/50 Dual Language Enrichment Model, defining a cross- curricular integrated standards based curriculum including language proficiencies focused on biliteracy  

Day 2

Building the foundation for cross – curricular lessons and units in English and Spanish, integrating language proficiencies and creating an instructional taxonomy focused on higher order thinking skills to achieve biliteracy in the Gómez and Gómez 50/50 Dual Language Enrichment classrooms

Day 3 

Understanding current research on biliteracy through instructional strategies, using Bilingual Pairs

 

Day 1

Examine the academic vocabulary in the content areas in order to enhance the development of biliteracy in the Gómez and Gómez 50/50 Dual Language Enrichment Classrooms

Day 2

Create instructional activities that promote academic language in the content areas
